Deadline to request a time extension for tax returns in the USA ends on April 18

With the tax filing season coming to an end, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) points out that if the taxpayer is unable to file their 2022 federal tax return by the deadline of April 18, he or she must request an extension within the deadline for filing the return. This deferral allows individuals to file their return by October 16, 2023.

The extension can be requested at or through Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File until April 18.

The IRS points out that getting an extension does not mean that the taxpayer will stop paying taxes. “If you owe taxes, you should pay them before the due date to avoid potential penalties and interest on the amount owed,” the IRS reports.
