Visa free nationals will need ETIAS to enter Schengen countries in 2023

Beginning November 2023, electronic travel authorization from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be required for all passport holders from countries who are exempt from visitor visa requirements to enter the European Union (maximum periods of 90 days in a period of 180 days) and those who are exempt from visitor visa requirements to enter the countries of the Schengen Area. Only persons under 18 years and over 70 years are exempt from requesting such authorization.

Considering the requirement for an electronic authorization, the following steps will be necessary, such as the obligation to fill out the digital form. After checking the information provided, comparing with their databases, the authorities will decide on the approval of ETIAS, which will be issued generally fast. However, in exceptional cases, the analysis may last 30 days.

After issued, ETIAS will be valid for up to three (3) years or the passport expires, applying the term that is shorter.

ETIAS will be linked with the passport informed at the time of the authorization request. It will be checked at the time of boarding and at the border entry control each time the visitor enters to the external borders of the Schengen Area.  It is important to emphasize that ETIAS does not apply in cases where the visa is already required, such as in the study and work hypotheses or any stay beyond 90 days in a 180 days period.
