The demand for “green cards”, the permanent immigration visa to live and work in the United States, grew by 36% in the past 12 months. The pursuit of Brazilians with high professional qualifications for a permanent visa increased considerably during the pandemic.
One of the reasons for the increase in visa requests is the greater flexibility given by the Biden administration with regards to immigration policy, which has made envisioning a visa for Brazilians easier.
According to data from Valor Econômico, just considering the requests made at consulates in Brazil, the demand for green cards by professionals of “national interest” or with a job offer in the US rose from 1,389 to 1,899, an increase of 36%, considering the 2020 fiscal year, which closed in September.
Valor also pointed out that approximately 60% of visas requested by Brazilians are done so through the Consulates, the rest being carried out by individuals already on American soil.
As a way to compensate for the stalling of the processes of obtaining visas, the US government almost doubled the number of visas – from 140,000 to 260,000 – for jobs of highly qualified professionals, which may be delivered in fiscal year 2021.
